Board Opens Hearing On Massive Howland Road Quarry
Select Board · Meeting of September 1, 2026
Lakeville Select Board opens hearing on 6.45-million-cubic-yard Howland Road quarry, continues it to October 6. Applicant Carl Malek's attorney, Eric Bransky, told the board it would be "frankly, irresponsible" to approve the permit Tuesday, and outlined a three-phase, 10-year mining plan across roughly 167 acres of a 566-acre parcel. Carver resident Josephine Biedling, who said blasting dust from a prior nearby project left her with a lung disease, urged the board to "think hard about allowing this to go through." Town Counsel Jay Tellerman said the board has broad discretion under its bylaw but expects three or four more hearing sessions before any decision.
Elsewhere, the board voted 5-0 to raise animal shelter fees, appointed Gina Moraes assistant treasurer-collector at $62,314, and approved a $26,560.31 change order for red fire station doors after members said cost overruns are mounting early in the project.
