School Committee Restores 4 Paraprofessional Jobs
School Committee · Meeting of September 2, 2026
LAKEVILLE — Freetown-Lakeville school committee restores four paraprofessional jobs using a transportation surplus. The School Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to move $180,598 in unanticipated FY26 state transportation reimbursement into the FY27 budget, putting $120,000 toward reopening four of 11 paraprofessional positions cut this year. Superintendent Dr.
Barbara Starkey said the roles, split 0.4 library and 0.6 grade-level support across Freetown-Lakeville Middle School, GRACE, Assawompset Elementary and Freetown Elementary, will reopen libraries two days a week. Member Tim Emery asked whether the funds could instead go entirely to grade-level support; Starkey said principals had already weighed that option. Member Courtney Brightman called it "a relatively small investment with a big potential benefit for the students." The remaining $60,598 stays reserved for fuel costs.
The committee also accepted a $25,000 DESE early college grant, a no-cost DESE tutoring grant for 58 elementary students, and a $12,000 equipment donation from the Lakeville Eagles Club.
